Reflecting on My Journey from Technology Sales to Entrepreneurship

Today, I want to take a deep dive into my personal mission and how it has shaped the way I approach business and life. Join me as I share my journey from selling technology to serving entrepreneurs and providing insights into the essential elements of a successful service-oriented business.

From Technology Sales to Entrepreneurship

My journey has been filled with twists and turns, and while I don’t often dwell on the past, it’s important to acknowledge the experiences that have led me to where I am today. In a previous life, I was deeply involved in selling complex technology projects to large corporations. While it had its moments of excitement, it also carried its fair share of challenges and moments of discontent. It wasn’t until 20 years ago that I made a pivotal decision to bring about a change in my life and business.

Evolving Mission and Vision

One of the turning points in my journey was the revelation I had after reading “The E Myth” by Michael Gerber. This book compelled me to reconsider the conventional notions of vision and mission for a business. I came to recognize that a mission and vision extend beyond the confines of a business; they encompass family, legacy, and a larger purpose. My mission became crystal clear—to provide services to executives and owners in service-oriented companies and help them achieve substantial improvements in performance, productivity, and profitability.

Crafting a Mission Statement

The process of formulating my mission statement was not a hasty one. It involved days and weeks of introspection and refinement. The resulting statement encapsulated my dedication to inspiring and developing individuals, harnessing my innate sales ability to assist those in need, and creating a legacy that extended beyond my immediate sphere of influence.

The Path to Fulfilling the Mission

Embarking on the journey to fulfill my mission has involved numerous milestones, from nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit in my own children to authoring a book that encapsulates the principles of a playoff-ready business. My passion for baseball has become intertwined with my business philosophy, as I draw parallels between the game and the strategies for success in the business world.

Navigating the Challenges

In my quest to help service-oriented businesses grow, I’ve encountered a myriad of challenges common to businesses regardless of their specific industry. I underscore the importance of understanding the challenges and opportunities for growth as fundamental elements in achieving meaningful scale.

Empowering Business Owners

My mission isn’t just about personal fulfillment; it’s about making a difference in the lives of business owners. The moment of clarity that I experienced after reading “The E Myth” at an airport in Connecticut remains a pivotal memory in my journey. I am driven by the desire to touch and inspire as many individuals as possible to achieve their goals, overcome the obstacles, and drive impactful change in their businesses and lives.
